For Students
St. Joseph Regional School believes in educating the entire child. There are many opportunities for students to become involved in the community as well as here at school.
All eighth grade students are required to complete thirty hours of Christian Community Service. Students have volunteered at food pantries, the Red Cross, March of Dimes, as well as served as altar servers in their local parishes to name a few.
SJRS offers after school clubs and sports activities such as:
- On site Karate classes for grades K-8,
- Recreational basketball program for grades 3-8
- Running club for grades 5-8 (new this year)
- Young readers
- Student council
- School newspaper
- Chess
- Environmental club
- Knitting club
All clubs are mentored by our classroom teachers.
Instrumental lessons are offered during the school day. For those who prefer, piano lessons, an enrichment program in wildlife, magic, and science are provided by an outside company after school.
Students are encouraged to become actively involved in our school.
Below is more information on some of the clubs available to St. Joseph students. All clubs will meet once a month (unless otherwise noted). They will start immediately after dismissal and run until 3:30.
Chess Club will be held once a.month after school with Mrs. Henriquez. it will either be on a Tuesday or Thursday. Chess Club is open to any student in grades 3-8. You must already know how to play chess, and you should bring your own snack.
Environmental Club is open to students in grades 4-8. This club will meet the third Tuesday of every month with Miss Olsen. In environmental club, students will focus on Go Green projects, educating the students of St. Joseph on these issues and making our school environmental friendly. Also in the plans for this club is incorporating a Service Learning aspect, which means integrating community service and the environment. The students will be allowed to brainstorm ideas and projects they might want to complete in this after school club. There is a fee of $5 in order to obtain the necessary supplies.
Knitting Club with Mrs. Orr is open to any student in grades 4-8. Students will bring a current project to work on if you know the basics, or come and learn how to knit with yarn that will be supplied. The club meets the second Tuesday of every month until 3 :45. You do not need to know how to knit. We will teach them how to in the first meeting. Please bring a pair of knitting needles (size 8 to 10) that are available at AC Moore, WalÂMart’s craft section, and other craft stores for a reasonable price.
Young Readers with Mrs. Missaggia and Mrs. Falivene will meet once a month on Tuesdays. Grades 1 and 2 are welcome! Teachers will read to students. They will discuss characters, setting, and outcomes of the story. Children will create a craft related to the story. A small snack will be provided. There is an $8 fee to join.
S.T.O.P. is open to students in grades 6-8. S.T.O.P. (Stop Teasing Other People) will meet with Mrs. Mallozzi and Mrs. Belli on the third Monday of each month. Members will have the opportunity to discuss, develop, and present activities on the importance of building good character. Please join us and share your ideas.
Newspaper called The St. Joe’s Gazette is written by the students and for the students of St. Joe’s. Responsibilities include coming up with interesting school topics, writing articles and submitting them with a deadline, taking photographs, and laying out the newspaper in a neatand organized format. The club will meet with Mrs. Malian and is open to students in grades 5-8.
Running Club with Mrs. Dugan and Mrs. Mai will meet every Thursday after school until 3:45. A permission slip will be required to join this club. Students in grades 5~8 will have the opportunity to run through sites including the graveyard, around the school, and Newton High School track whenever possible. Good running shoes are required as well as gym clothes (or comfortable T-Shirt & sweats) and don’t forget a water bottle!
