Vocabulary and Reading
Dear Students,
I would like to give you a brief overview of our Vocabulary and Reading classes.
Vocabulary
Each Monday we will start a new lesson in Vocabulary. You will be writing a vocabulary card for each word on Monday. The card will list the word on the blank side, as well as its pronunciation(s) and derivative(s.) On the line side you will list each definition provided and its part of speech. I will show you a sample card. All cards will be checked on Tuesday for completion and legibility. You may print these if you like.
Tuesday and Wednesday nights you will complete a listed assignment that will be checked the following day. Thursday nights will be used for studying for either the weekly quiz or test on the above material. Homework will be checked each day. You will receive full credit if ALL work is done and HALF credit if it is incomplete at the time we check it and later completed. If work is not complete , or not turned in it will receive NO credit.
Reading
Reading class will be comprised of several elements. We have a textbook that contains many interesting stories of various genres. We will read many of these stories, and complete comprehension and skill builder activities. Since these activities are integral to reading you will be graded on such assignments to assess your abilities. You will also be reading and writing a monthly book report which will be due on the last Friday of each month unless otherwise noted (December’s is due on the 22nd.)
You may pick any book of your liking/interest and reading level. Each report should give a brief summary of the story/plot/characters. All reports will be typed TNR #12, using all conventional grammar rules, and turned in on time, to receive full credit. This report will be graded and a reduction of 10 points per day will be taken for late papers.
We will also be creating a writing wall to display the stories that were read. You may bring this book in to read during quiet times when you are finished assigned work. Book reports may be turned in early and should be if you are leaving for an extended vacation.
I would also like to incorporate 2/3 classics that fit with our Social Studies lessons and will provide another perspective. You may already own these or wish to get them from your local library. We may also be able to purchase these at group discount. More information will be provided.
I look forward to learning of your interests.
