I would like to take this opportunity to discuss my goals for this year.  Our 6th, 7th and 8th grade students are quickly approaching their high school years.  I intend to focus on the study and organizational skills that will prepare them for this milestone.  A sense of responsibility is key to their success.

Book Covers:

All textbooks and workbooks must be covered.  Soft-covered workbooks should be covered using clear contact paper.  Hard-covered textbooks should be covered using fabric (Book Sox) or paper covers.  All student notebooks and supplies should be clearly labeled with the student’s complete name.

Homework:

Homework is one important student responsibility.  All students should be using a homework planner to write down homework assignments and stay organized.  Please feel free to check your child’s planner at any time.

Students are assigned homework almost every night.  The purpose of my assignments is to provide your child with the opportunity to reinforce concepts and skills introduced and practiced during his or her school day.  Homework should not be frustrating for your child and should not take an inordinate amount of time.  If your child is struggling with an assignment, please include a note about the difficulty your child encountered.  I will work with your child to answer his or her questions.

If your child is absent, he or she should complete missed assignments upon his or her return to school.

School policy is that three missing homework assignments in any subject area, per marking period, are equal to one after school detention.  Please check The Student Handbook for additional and updated information on school rules and regulations.  Students are responsible for all homework assignments and must complete missed assignments.  Late assignments will not receive homework credit.

Throughout the year, projects will be assigned that will be due on a specified date.  Students will be given complete instructions and timelines.  It is important that students learn to manage their time and pace their work in order to complete projects within the specified period.

Communication:

Communication between us is vital to your child’s success in school.  Conferences and extra help will always be available to you and your child whenever needed.  I am available most mornings and afternoons to provide assistance for your child; however, he or she should make an appointment with me in advance.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at school by email, note, or telephone at any time.

Sign and Return Folder:

Your child will receive a “Sign and Return” folder each week.  I ask that you review the papers (tests, quizzes, and completed work) in this folder.  Tests and quizzes will be in the right folder pocket stamped “sign and return.”  Papers in the left folder pocket will be for your review and retention.  Please return all signed tests and quizzes, as well as the folder, the next school day.  I have found this method to be an invaluable tool in keeping parents informed of their child’s progress.

Email:

You may contact me via email anytime at dbelli@sjccs.org.  I will respond to your concerns within 24 hours.

Your child is important to me.  Knowing about my students as individuals enables me to provide instruction and assistance that best meets their needs.  Please feel free to share with me any information you believe would be helpful to me in working with your child.

Once again, I am excited about the opportunity of working with you and your child this year.  Together, we can make this school year the best one ever for your child!
