Grade 5

Welcome to 5th Grade!

Mrs. Mallan

Read Newsletter

It has been a pleasure meeting my new fifth grade children and their parents.  On (Back to School Night) the children constructed figures of themselves and placed them at their desks.  It was great fun and some amazing resemblances.

HOMEWORK HELP

Spelling

We have had our first spelling test and all seemed to do well.

Math

My math group has started learning about the reading, writing and most importantly the meaning of decimals.

Social Studies

In social studies we are learning about the beginning of the Maya Civilization.  At times the information is gruesome but always interesting.  We will be constructing Maya head dresses.  Ask your fifth grader why the head pieces are so large.

Reading

We will be starting our first young adult novel (The Witches by Roald Dahl).  I will be happy to order this book for you.  The cost will be $7.00.  The novels will coincide with our reading program from McGraw Hill.  Please encourage your child to read.

Mrs. Mallan’s Book Club

As children reading enough?  I don’t think so.  Reading helps children foster a lifelong love of books, ensures better standardized test scores, promotes greater success in school, and helps instill the values we most want to pass on.

My class will be reading six young adult novels throughout the year.  I have selected age appropriate books that most children love.  Our first novel will be the The Witches by Roald Dahl.  If you would like me to purchase this book for your child it will cost $7.00

Creative Writing

We have started our first creative writing lesson.  The title is …If I were an Olympian.  The children will be given a sport, research the sport on the laptops and write an essay.

Grammar

In grammar the children are working on writing complete and intelligent sentences.  Recognizing subjects, predicates, run-on sentences and fragments are important skills that need to be mastered.

Science, Advanced Math, Religion

Science, advanced math and religion are taught with other teachers and are off to a good start.  The children are getting used to moving around from class to class with the correct books and homework.

Weekly Work

I will send home your child’s completed work each week.  Please sign the top sheet and have your child return (top sheet only) to me.

We had a bagel party….great success!  We will try to have one each month.

I am enjoying your children and am looking forward to a wonderful year.
